Over time, plague and tartar will accumulate on your teeth which unfortunately creates the right conditions for bacteria to thrive next to your gums. To keep your teeth clean and healthy, regular scaling and polishing is necessary for your teeth.

While flossing will help minimize plague, tartar can’t be removed at home and can only be removed by a professional dentist.

What to expect:

During your appointment, your dentist will begin with scaling your teeth, using special tools to remove plaque and tartar. Next, your dentist will use air flow to remove the small remains of the plaque under the gum which not visible by eye then will polish your teeth using a special paste to remove any stains. Finally, your dental professional will use floss to make sure the areas between the teeth are clean.

FAQ

[accordion id="my-accordion"][accordion_item title=" Do I need scaling and polishing even if I’ve been cleaning my teeth well?" open="true"]Yes! There are far too many places around your teeth that are hard to access with normal brushing and flossing. Additionally, tartar can’t be removed at home and you will need an expert to help you remove them.[/accordion_item][accordion_item title="Is scaling and polishing painful?"]Most people find scaling and polishing completely painless. Some tartar may be stubborn and could cause discomfort or slight pain while being removed. If you experience any pain, you may request local anesthetic from your dentist. [/accordion_item]
